A Word From the Pastor - October 30 2018

Church Family,

Over the next few weeks we are going to read through the book of Jonah during our Sunday morning worship times. Sadly, this book has often been watered down and presented as a story of a fish! However, the fish only shows up in TWO verses. Rather, the book of Jonah is a story about God’s character and our relationship with Him. Jonah serves as a mirror that shows us our flaws and reveals Christ to us.

I’d encourage you to read through the book of Jonah before this Sunday. It is only four chapters and will probably take less than half an hour to read through. Why do I ask you to read it? Because I want you to see the big picture before we dig into the nitty gritty details from the first 3 verses of chapter 1 that we will cover on Sunday.

Ultimately, the book of Jonah teaches us about ourselves. It teaches us about our sin and our need for Christ’s compassion/instruction. “It [the book of Jonah] wakes us up to our worst tendencies,” according to one author. My goal is to challenge each one of us to follow Christ even when his calling on our lives challenges our personal goals and aspirations.

Please join me in reading through this book and prepare your hearts in prayer as we gather on Sunday to begin this series. Invite your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors…etc. God is good, and I’m excited to see what He will teach us through Jonah!

My sermon will be from Jonah 1:1-3 – Competing Visions of Life
